Why Is Your Cone Crusher Overheating? 9 Causes & Solutions for High Oil Temp

Cone crushers are typically used as secondary crushing equipment, primarily suitable for crushing various mineral materials with hardness ranging from medium to high.

During the operation of a cone crusher, high lubricating oil temperature can lead to reduced lubrication, causing the machine to malfunction and severely impacting production. Therefore, it's crucial to promptly identify and resolve this issue. Below is a detailed explanation of the causes and solutions for high oil temperature in cone crushers.

NO.1
A blocked return oil pipe can cause poor lubricating oil circulation, resulting in low return oil volume and high oil temperature. The solution is to check the return oil pipe for blockages, identify the cause of the blockage, and clear the blockage to ensure smooth lubricating oil circulation, thus reducing the factors contributing to high oil temperature.

NO.2
Lubricating oil failure can also cause oil temperature rise. If the lubricating oil used in the cone crusher contains moisture, dust, or other contaminants, it will fail to achieve the expected lubrication effect. These impurities will also cause abnormal wear inside the equipment, leading to increased oil temperature. The solution is to replace the lubricating oil. Before replacing the oil, the oil tank should be cleaned to ensure its cleanliness and prevent lubrication failure and high temperatures caused by contamination.

NO.3
A large contact area between the cup-shaped bearing and the main shaft body, or poor contact, can also cause high lubricating oil temperature. The main reason for poor contact is the long service life of the cone crusher's main shaft body, resulting in severe wear on the outer spherical surface. When the wear reaches below the non-contact step of the lower spherical surface, the inner edge of the main shaft body will come into contact with the cup-shaped bearing, causing a temperature rise. There are two main solutions to this problem:

1. Replace the cone crusher's main shaft and scrape the cup-shaped bearing.
2. Machin the inner edge of the bowl-shaped bearing of the cone crusher to ensure it does not make ball-milling contact with the inner edge of the main shaft body, and scrape the bowl-shaped bearing.

NO.4
The phenomenon of increased oil temperature caused by poor contact between the eccentric sleeve and the main shaft, and cracks on the upper part of the eccentric copper sleeve, is due to poor fit between the eccentric shaft and the thrust bearing inside the cone crusher. This causes a change in the eccentric shaft's running trajectory, leading to poor contact between the eccentric sleeve and the main shaft. The solution is to find the cause of the poor contact, grind the contact surface of the copper sleeve, and drill holes at the crack ends to prevent crack propagation.

NO.5
Inspect the contact between the eccentric shaft and the copper bushing of the cone crusher. Specifically, lift the eccentric shaft for inspection. Poor contact is mainly manifested in: poor contact at the copper bushing contact surface, bearing failure, cracks on the upper edge of the bushing, loose alloy blocks holding the copper bushing in place, and uneven wear between the lower end face of the eccentric shaft and the upper end face of the upper thrust bearing. The main reasons for poor contact are threefold:

1. Foreign matter accumulates in the eccentric shaft positioning hole, pushing up the positioning pin and causing wear on the positioning pin and uneven wear on the lower end face of the eccentric shaft;
2. The dimensions of the positioning point between the lower end face of the eccentric shaft and the upper surface of the thrust bearing do not match. 3. Uneven wear on the upper thrust bearing of the cone crusher, with an excessively high thrust step, causes contact with the eccentric copper sleeve during operation, leading to wear and overheating of the eccentric copper sleeve.

NO.6
Inspecting the oil pan of the cone crusher: When the spline groove of the thrust bearing on the oil pan end cover is worn and grooved, it will also cause an increase in oil temperature. This is because the grooved spline groove of the oil pan will jam the lower thrust plate of the thrust bearing, causing the lower thrust plate to jam and tilt. This causes the eccentric shaft to run at an angle, resulting in poor contact between the eccentric shaft and the sleeve, leading to overheating and bearing failure, thus causing an increase in oil temperature. The solution is to replace the oil pan and thrust plate to ensure smooth operation of the eccentric shaft.
NO.7
Large axial and radial runout of the drive shaft of the cone crusher will cause changes in the tooth tip clearance, which is also one of the causes of high lubricating oil temperature. The solution is to adjust the adjusting ring or add shims to the coupling shaft end to ensure that the axial runout reaches the standard value.

No. 8
Check the tooth tip and flank clearances of the eccentric shaft and horizontal shaft gears. If they do not meet the requirements, adjust by adding or removing shims to ensure the clearances meet the requirements.

No. 9
Check whether the pipelines of the cone crusher's cooling system are unobstructed, and whether the gate valves are damaged or blocked. A properly functioning cooling system can provide adequate cooling and reduce oil temperature rise.

In actual production, it is necessary to investigate based on the actual working conditions to identify the causes of oil temperature rise, and then implement appropriate solutions to ensure suitable oil temperature, thus guaranteeing the smooth operation of the cone crusher.
